10 of Hollywood's Priciest Pieces of History: From the 'Friends' Couch to 'Oz's' Ruby Reds

Zade Rosenthal/Marvel Studios/Paramount Pictures"Thor" Marvel Studios is wasting no time in getting Thor 2 back on track after shocking Hollywood by parting ways with director Patty Jenkins on Tuesday.our editor recommends'Thor 2' Director Patty Jenkins Exits'Pretty Little Liars,' 'Thor,' Charlie Sheen Are Top Twitter Topics of 2011 Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the company is looking at two director prospects: Alan Taylor and Daniel Minahan. Taylor's most well-known feature may be 1996's Palookaville, but he has become a huge cable TV helmer, directing episodes of HBO's Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and The Sopranos and AMC's Mad Men, among others. He also directed the pilot for NBC's Playboy Club. Minahan also is a big name in the TV world, working on Game of Thrones, True Blood, Deadwood and Grey's Anatomy. Marvel was also in the middle of hiring a writer when the Jenkins exit occurred. Don Payne had written a draft and Sheldon Turner was among those being discussed to work on the script, but the new shortlist of possible writers consists of John Collee, whose credits include Happy Feet and Master and Commander: Far Side of the World, Robert Rodat, the scribe who created the TNT show Falling Skies and wrote Saving Private Ryan, and Roger Avary, best known for sharing an Oscar with Quentin Tarantino for writing Pulp Fiction. Jenkins beat out several other contenders for the Thor 2 directing gig when Marvel announced her as its choice in mid-October. The move put the helmer on track to be the first female director of a Marvel movie and only woman to ever direct a big-budget superhero or comic book movie. That changed when word broke on Tuesday that she and Marvel were going their separate ways over the standard excuse of "creative differences." Marvel may be moving fast on the sequel to this past summer's hit, but it does have some time on its side: Thor 2 is slated for a Nov. 15, 2013 release. Marvel declined to comment. What Kevin Spacey Thinks About Using Cell Phones in Theaters

While there’s hope that one idiotic theater in Washington encouraging audiences to text during movies dies a speedy death, take heart in the actions of new Movieline hero Kevin Spacey. The actor took a stand at a recent Sydney performance of Richard III when a rude theatergoer answered their cell phone during the play. “Spacey, the would-be Duke of Gloucester, singled out the phone owner and bellowed ‘Tell them we’re busy!’,” reports the UK Telegraph. “The audience erupted in support.” Sigh. If only actors could leap off the screen to do the same in cineplexes. [Telegraph via Movie City News]

Feist

Presented by KCRW. Also appearing: Chilly GonzalesIf she had wanted it, Leslie Feist could have easily snagged the indie-pop princess crown. Her quadruple-Grammy-nominated 2007 album, "The Reminder," boasted catchy tunes such as "1234" and "My Moon Man" that sold countless iPods and taught kids how to count along with Elmo. But instead of cashing in on that success, Feist took time off to regroup and rejuvenate, and returned with "Metals," a thoughtful, introspective collection of songs that showcases her smoky, honey- tinged voice and complex musicianship, proving she'd rather be a serious artist than a pop confection. Now four albums into her career, Feist has amassed loyal fans and admirers, many of whom exhibited their lively spirit from the moment she took the stage at the sold-out Wiltern. Kicking off with the haunting "Undiscovered First" from the new album, Feist, who was backed by a three-piece band and a trio of talented female singers, seemed completely at ease and in her element. She jovially bantered with the crowd, encouraging them to blow on a conch shell she passed around, and teasing Los Angelenos about being too cool to sing along. The band segued into "A Commotion," which proved that Feist and her band can get as loud and rowdy as the hardest rock band, only to turn on a dime and head in a quieter direction. During the two-hour set, Feist performed nearly every track off of "Metals," and played only a smattering of her earlier material. She interestingly chose to re- orchestrate familiar tunes such as "Mushaboom" and "So Sorry," taking them in a darker, less poppy direction that rendered them almost unrecognizable. She obviously had no intention of pandering to the crowd. A highlight of the evening came when Feist surrendered the spotlight to her back-up singers, the female folk trio Mountain Man, who delivered an a capella tune with such gorgeous harmonies that they managed to silence the rowdy bar-goers at the back of the venue and elicit whoops and hollers from the crowd. Hearing what they were capable of made it all the more impressive that Feist's voice is such a finely tuned instrument that she can command these wailing sirens for her own aims. The evening culminated with a five-song encore, which included a moving performance of "Metals'" final track "Cicadas and Gulls," featuring nothing but Feist, her back-up singers and an acoustic guitar, and "Feel It All," the danciest, most feel-good tune of the night, especially given that "1234" was notably absent from the proceedings. Her frequent collaborator and opening act, Chilly Gonzales, joined her on piano for a final number, "Limit To Your Love." Before saying goodnight, Feist hopped atop the piano and surveyed the adoring crowd, who seemed ready and willing to follow her to new heights. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Growing Audiobook Industry Offers Rewards and Challenges for Stars

Richard Ferrone has seen the field of audiobooks come full circle. When he began narrating in 1990, these were mostly obtainable in libraries or through subscription and were difficult to find in main bookstoresperhaps 10 game titles on the shelf. Through the finish from the decade, "you did not have only one shelf," he remembered lately, "you'd an entire wall." Now, in age digital downloads, the shelves are sparse again. But that does not mean clients are slow. Actually, it's flourishing, for well-established veterans for example Ferrone as well as for beginners like Shannon McManus. The La resident began narrating audiobooks in mid-April by late October had already recorded seven game titles.Based on a 2009 survey through the Audio Marketers Association, 30 member companies totaled $331 million in revenue in 2008, and also the industry in general might gross near to $1 billion annually. A completely independent producer who has worked within the area because the early the nineteen nineties stated, "The amount of production being released of trade audiobook posting is staggeringmany occasions what it really was about ten years ago.InchHistorical evidence from stars can also be encouraging. From the 10 who have been questioned with this article, all were making their living solely as stars, and earnings from audiobook marketers paid for for around 33 percent to 85 % of the annual earnings.Of course, you will find disadvantages to rapid growth. Huge production has meant sporadic quality, and hourly wages have, normally, dropped substantially. "I'd buddies of mine in early 1990's getting outlandish sums of cashDollar10,000 to $12,000 for 3 times of work," stated Scott Brick, a number one voice in the market, using more than 600 game titles to his credit. "Nowadays, you are likely to be lucky to obtain $3,000" for your period of time. This small square from the entertainment market is, like all other, within an intense duration of adaptation, and stars will work harder than ever before. The independent producer, who requested to stay anonymous so he could speak candidly in regards to a business where he's a totally free agent, wondered via email whether audiobooks have downshifted in the golden chronilogical age of the the nineteen nineties towards the bronze chronilogical age of the 2010s.Tavia Gilbert, an actress in Tigard, Maine, was more neutral. "I believe the audiobook market is in a interesting transitional point," she stated. "It will likely be interesting to determine the way it shakes out."'Quite, A significant Task' Audiobook narration is much like almost every other type of acting, only much more: Anybody having a mouth thinks they are able to get it done. Sean Pratt, that has read 600 books because the mid-1990's and it is in the center of recording David Promote Wallace's "Infinite Jest," constantly receives queries from stars who wish to enter the area. This is exactly what he informs them:"Go back home, see your bookcase, shut your vision, achieve out, and grab a magazine. You do not get to select. Take that book and sit somewhere quiet and small, just like a closet, and browse aloud for 3 hrs each day. For those who have any stumbles, support and begin the sentence again. Should you hit a thing you do not know how you can pronounce, go look up. Do this for 3 hrs each day, for 2 days, after which, if you are still interested, call me.InchIn 16 years," he stated, "I have had five people call me."Kyle McCarley, who lives in La, is really a relative newcomer towards the business. He built their own studio for around $1,000 and it has established a voice-over career throughout yesteryear 2 yrs. When requested how hard it will be a narrator, he chuckled. "Oh, it is extremely, a significant task," he stated. "Quite an undertaking."When McCarley will get a magazine, he reads it completely to acquaint themself using the story, to obtain the voice from the author, and also to write a personality guide. Some books have 100 or even more figures, and that he supplies a unique voice for every. "Once I finish reading through, I feel the guide and record a brief sample," he stated. "I'll have [the producers] participate in it and find out should they have feedback. When they desire a change, I'll record a brand new sample."Only then does he get into his recording booth, where he works eight hrs each day for 3 or 4 days straight. He stays another couple of weeks cutting the audio together. Due to the standard of his work, McCarley makes $150 per finished hour of the audiobook, that is $25 to $50 over a typical nonunion rate. But his actual hourly minute rates are about $37. "You most likely log four hrs of labor for each finished hour," he stated.Books Undercovered The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists has already established jurisdiction over audiobooks because the nineteen thirties, once they were first documented on 78s for that blind. Rates were covered within the Seem Tracks Code, which mandated purchase every hour the actor put in the studio. Within the the nineteen nineties, companies for example Books on Tape and Recorded Books discovered a huge consumer market, particularly among individuals. However their business design did not always lend itself to having to pay stars by studio hour, stated Pratt, who's a part of AFTRA's steering committee on audiobooks. When he began out, Pratt wasn't an AFTRA member. The union "did not know very well what went into making an unabridged audiobook,Inch he stated, "how costly it had been, how lengthy [it required] to learn.Inch The audiobook companies balked at having to pay for studio hrs, and "AFTRA really skipped the boat for any very long time about looking to get this stuff under union contract," he added.Within the mid-2000s, AFTRA authorities enlisted Pratt (who had registered as a member when he done a show on HGTV) along with other audiobook narrators with the hope they may help the union bring much more of the work under contract."I introduced in 3 or 4 [marketers]coupled with them sign a union contract," he stated. "You will find many people who narrate audiobooks who're AFTRA people who wanted health insurance and retirement, and that we labored overtime to create increasing numbers of people on. It does not cost much more to really make it a union gig, and that we get health insurance and retirement, so everyone wins."The deals will also be within the publisher's interest, and also the union's greatest concession, in some instances, continues to be altering the level of salary from studio hrs to finished hrs."AFTRA contracts have minimum rates for narrators, plus health insurance and retirement contributions," stated Steve Sidawi, an AFTRA organizer. "The rates will be different somewhat" but generally vary from $200 to $350 per finished hour. Holter Graham, a longtime narrator and leader of AFTRA's NY local, stated getting Audible.com to sign a union deal was among the key moves. It's possessed by Amazon . com.com and it has a sizable facility in Jersey City, N.J. David Zema, a longtime narrator and radio producer, stated Audible is running "a few changes each day,Inch such may be the interest in audiobooks.Because the Audible signing, Graham stated, "we are signing deals right and left."Breathe Gilbert's first response in the audiobook world was quick and certain. "We are not interested, many thanks, don't apply again," she stated she was relayed through a business that received her demo. "They stated I'd some enunciation issues, some breathing issues."She tied to it met Grover Gardner, a longtime narrator that has labored like a casting director for Blackstone Audio and it has since recorded a lot more than 100 books for many marketers. Gilbert values the way the work has enhanced her acting in other mediamostly through her enhanced breathing."That's the essence of existence, and thus this is the essence of each and every acting job," she stated. "You decide to go from the inside out, in the breath with the musculature from the body, and so the character radiates after that.InchShe also relishes the talent needed to create a quality audiobook and hopes that elevated production does not dilute the job. "Somebody's not reading through a magazine for you personally they are carrying out a magazine for you personally,Inch Gilbert stated. "Yet you will find increasingly more stars entering the marketplace since it is accessible. If you possess the technological tools to become a sound book narrator, that you can do ittechnically. However I can hear the main difference between someone who's acting using their voice and someone who's reading through a magazine.InchAssets Here is a narrow your search of audiobook industry websites.ACX.com: The Audio book Creation Exchange, possessed by Audible.com, enables authors, agents, marketers, along with other privileges holders to switch information and narrators and producers to locate work. Before I Leave You

A Huntington Theater Company presentation of a play in two acts by Rosanna Yamagiwa Alfaro. Directed by Jonathan Silverstein. Emily - Kippy Goldfarb Jeremy - Ross Bickell Koji - Glenn Kubota Trish - Karen MacDonald Peter - Alexis CaminsLate-in-life changes among a group of sixtysomething Cambridge friends is the focus of this world preem at Beantown's Huntington Theater Company. But even if it taps into a potentially rich demographic, "Before I Leave You" proves a superficially written and poorly staged production that smacks of lower-the-bar provincialism. This creaky, clunky work by local playwright Rosanna Yamagiwa Alfaro diminishes the reputation the Huntington has established in the development of new plays and writers (most recently the excellent "Sons of the Prophet"). How such a shoddy piece of playwriting made it to the main stage of a major regional is the biggest mystery surrounding a play that has none. One feels for the actors (well, most of them) who are stuck with stilted dialogue, one-note characters and a plot that can be easily surmised as soon as it is set up. Helmer Jonathan Silverstein ("The Temperamentals") is also at a loss, providing rudimentary staging that leaves his actors stranded. Allen Moyer's set design of towers of white bookcases looks like it's trying to impose a metaphor on a play that has little meaning. "Before I Leave You" centers on a quartet of elder friends around Harvard: Jeremy (Ross Bickell), an esteemed writer who has had some recent health problems; his chatterbox sister Trish (Karen MacDonald) who is living with her sibling temporarily; his best friend and fellow professor Koji (an awkward, wooden performance by Glenn Kubota) and the professor's wife, Emily (Kippy Goldfarb), whom the writer has been in love with for years, unbeknownst to everyone except the audience. The tensions between the autocratic Asian father and his likable but aimless son Peter (Alexis Camins) provides most of the conflict. As everyone frets about Jeremy's health, several characters make well-telegraphed changes to their lives. Themes of Asian identity, responsibility and following-one's-bliss are only lightly examined here, with neither insight nor grace. Camins offers a bit of charm, and Bickell and Goldfarb manage to retain some dignity. But otherwise "Before I Leave" reps a Huntington low point.Sets, Allen Moyer; costumes, Michael Krass; lighting, David Lander; sound and original music, David Remedios; production stage manager, Carola Morrone LaCoste; stage manager, Ryan A. Project Runway's Anya: I didn't Think I'd Win

Anya Ayoung-Chee Since the former Miss Trinidad and Tobago, Anya Ayoung-Chee have been recognized worldwide on her behalf beauty. Nevertheless the Project Runway Season 9 champion wants the attractive things she produces to know overseas. With the competition, the designer inspired audiences along with her can-do attitude. She made a decision to pursue her fashion dreams following a tragic dying of her brother Pilar. Although she'd some local success inside the Caribbean on her behalf designs, she needed the next thing and learned to stitch four several days before using for and being cast on Project Runway. The Project Runway Season 9 champion is... After being introduced the champion Thursday, Ayoung-Chee spoke to TVGuide.com by what she must learn, how she doesn't hold a grudge against competitor Joshua McKinley and her plans money for hard times. Congratulations! How hard could it happen to be as well as sturdy . win a secret?Anya Ayoung-Chee: Thank you! Sometimes whether or not this were with my close buddies, it absolutely was difficult. And, oh gosh, everybody asked for me all the time and everywhere I went. However I didn't desire to spoil it. It's much more fun to uncover instantly, and so i am happy which i didn't provide away. How could it happen to be when everyone discovered? You'd some type of viewing party?Ayoung-Chee: Yes. Home is NY therefore i stood a party here, which i'd one inch Trinidad - I used to be Skyping together. Trinidad and Tobago went crazy. It's like the World Cup or something like that like this. It's crazy and everybody was screaming. It absolutely was really overwhelming. Inside the moment, the thing that was coping with your brain if you discovered you'd won?Ayoung-Chee: I used to be really shocked. I did not anticipate it, particularly because it only decided to be a few days before that we almost went home because I didn't obtain the best options from the products showing the idol idol judges inside the three looks. I used to be so thrilled being still inside the running, however i did not think I'd win. Therefore it might be an entire shock in my opinion. If you learned you'd won inside the finale, furthermore you developed a indicate thank Heidi Klum on her behalf support. Exactly what are your feelings about her part within your success?Ayoung-Chee: At first, Heidi rallied personally because the other idol idol judges were not really considering letting me be round the cast because of my inadequate sewing capabilities. Whether or not this were this is not on her, I wouldn't are actually there I do think that. What's nice about her, though, is always that she was always fair. Even though she'd pressed to own me around the program, after i didn't succeed, she made certain to inform me that. Therefore I really appreciated they wasn't performing on any favoritism, but she it had been integral to my sitting on the cast to start with. Simply how much perhaps you have overhaul for the final collection at Fashion Week?Ayoung-Chee: I virtually did half from it, so from 10 pieces I made five yesterday. [Laughs] I realize it's crazy, but we have reached visit Mood you know, to make sure that really aided. Geez, I am unsure a few things i may have done without that. Possibly you've showed up at in conclusion you could you just produce pressurized?Ayoung-Chee: [Laughs] I don't think only, but clearly I'm effective in it. I am unsure where which will come from, however think I really do produce better after i am forced to make it happen. You think the criticisms you have to take more training to date as technique and concentrate more diverse styles are fair?Ayoung-Chee: Yeah, I don't anticipate making clothes for my clients directly, however do realize that getting skill will improve my design sensibility and If only to carry on that path. So, In my opinion I'm prone to challenge myself continue to learn more techniques. It'll only make my creating better. And also to have the ability to ensure it is inside the worldwide market, I have to possess a wider variety. I really do believe getting good sewing technique can help me in creating things, let's say for winter, and outdoors of what I'm acquainted with. The creative silhouette round the dress inspired with the raven handled to obtain a specific favorite. Has anybody requested that you just remake it... though an even more practical method of getting interior and exterior it (instead of sewing a person in and cutting them out)?Ayoung-Chee: [Laughs] Literally, just what you mentioned I've been asked for to accomplish this. They require me to position a zipper about it. Joshua McKinley always made an appearance so amplified and angry at you and your accomplishments. Are you currently offering add-ons inside your fashion line?Ayoung-Chee: Absolutely. Just like you, I merely think an outfit-up costume is not complete unless of course obviously you've styled it properly. I like ear-rings, I like bracelets, I like rings. I'm super into add-ons, and i'm absolutely beginning that arena but it's very viable commercial because you don't need to do dimensions or a number of people things. Inside the Following a Runway special deals, Kimberly Goldson stated that she's had many male fans request her out. Possibly you've had any similar plans or attention because arena?Ayoung-Chee: You understand what's funny, it absolutely was just a few of people, but overall the messages are actually much more friendly and innocent. What is the funniest fan response or request you've received?Ayoung-Chee: Hmm, this is an excellent question. Lots of it has been so competent concept of inspiring people to complete ... anything they have been imaging to accomplish. ... Just how can they message and make contact with you? What's your Twitter?Ayoung-Chee: My Twitter title is @AnyadeRogue after which it on Facebook. This is a little overwhelmeing,. Cablevision earnings slip on video losses

Big NY-area cabler Cablevision Systems Friday saw earnings for the September quarter fall, revealing a loss of 19,000 video subscribers from the previous three-month period partly offset by an uptick in voice and high-speed Internet biz. Net income plunged to $40 million from $112 million. Company cited higher programming, sales and marketing costs as well as a $16 million hit from Hurricane Irene in the NY metro area in late summer. Revenue rose 8% to about $1.7 billion, including contributions from Bresnan, a smaller cable operator acquired last December. Excluding Bresnan, Cablevision said revenue would have been essentially flat. Cablevision's numbers emphasized what Time Warner Cable illustrated the day before, a slippage of video subs to competition from telecom services like Verizon's Fios and possibly, although it's still early days, nascent inroads by new video streaming services like Netflix and Hulu and others. The company had 3.626 million customers at the end of Sept. The number of video customers dipped 19,000 to 3.264 from the quarter ended in June. On the upside, the company added 17,000 new voice customers and 38,000 new high-speed data customers. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Why Hollywood Is Flocking to the Bird Streets Neighborhood

This story first appeared in the Oct. 21 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.our editor recommendsScientology's Hollywood Real Estate EmpireCelebrity Scientologists Weigh in on the Church's Real Estate Program'Real Housewives' Face Real Estate Troubles On a recent afternoon, Blue Jay Way was buzzing with activity. A caravan of mammoth 12-wheeled trucks lumbered down the steep street, hauling tons of dirt from the excavation site where a multimillion-dollar house is being built. Construction workers nearby unloaded a cargo van and chatted idly. The workday din was interrupted -- but only briefly -- when a two-tone Rolls-Royce blasted up the half-mile-long street, the sedan's bleating exhaust note catching the attention of the laborers. PHOTOS: Hollywood's Biggest Real Estate Deals: Matthew Perry, Ellen DeGeneres, Sacha Baron Cohen The scene says a lot about the bird streets neighborhood, one of Los Angeles' most exclusive and sought-after enclaves. On Blue Jay Way, for example, three residences are under construction; nearby on Thrasher Avenue, another two are being built. The neighborhood -- known for its stunning views and extreme privacy -- became exceedingly popular during the real estate boom of the past decade, and prices soared. Property values have taken a hit during the economic downturn, but because the neighborhood includes only a few hundred properties, it remains pricey and in serious demand among producers, actors and moguls alike. Still, those who are now buying in the area -- there are a handful -- are scoring deals as houses routinely sell for less than their asking prices. PHOTOS: Hollywood's Biggest Real Estate Deals: Rupert Murdoch, Kate Walsh, Jonah Hill, Erwin Stoff Residents in the neighborhood, which is named after its many avian-themed streets, include A-listers Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Jodie Foster and Keanu Reeves; musician Herbie Hancock; talk show host Byron Allen; producer Megan Ellison; The Big C showrunner Jenny Bicks; Hustler publisher Larry Flynt; and Sunset Tower Hotel owner Jeff Klein and producer John Goldwyn. In August, Matthew Perry ($8.65 million for a sleek custom home) and Gateway Inc. co-founder Ted Waitt ($11.53 million for a residence with an indoor/outdoor pool) purchased in the community; Christina Aguilera sold a four-bedroom residence for $4.65 million; and Jennifer Aniston and boyfriend Justin Theroux inked a deal for a rental that costs roughly $17,000 per month. PHOTOS: Hollywood's Biggest Real Estate Deals: Jennifer Lopez, Jim Wiatt, Brad Grey "Five years ago it was hot, but it wasn't as hot as it is today. There is no disputing this is one of the most valuable areas in the city," says luxury home developer Steve Hermann, who has built several residences in the area. Two of these, on adjacent properties, are now owned by Ellison, a True Grit producer and daughter of Oracle Corp. co-founder Larry Ellison. She owns a third adjoining residence and has spent nearly $33 million to acquire the properties. Her dealmaking has been the subject of great speculation as residents wonder about her plans for the compound; she declined comment. Brokers and residents say the neighborhood's superior "jetliner" views of the city and proximity to the Sunset Strip -- a drive from Soho House to the top of Blue Jay Way takes less than five minutes -- make it more desirable than other tony hillside enclaves, such as Outpost Estates or parts of Bel-Air. Ben Bacal, a Keller Williams Realty agent who represented the sellers in the Perry and Waitt deals, says homes that are considered teardowns can fetch as much as $7 million if the lots offer "10 out of 10" views. And homes without views can be valued at half of what comparable homes with views are worth. Indeed, residences with superb views fetch among the highest prices in L.A. on a per-square-foot basis. Perry purchased his home for $2,162 per square foot; Waitt bought his for $2,026 per foot. Those prices are typically achieved only in neighborhoods such as Malibu's Carbon Beach. It may be surprising to some, but the bird streets neighborhood is not without its sense of community. "It's a really nice feeling in a city where there is much more anonymity than you would really like," says Hollywood divorce attorney Laura Wasser, who has represented Aguilera and Angelina Jolie. The neighborhood's most obvious expression of communal togetherness is its Doheny Dining Club, an open group that meets roughly twice a year for progressive dinners that have drawn up to 50 people. Founded in 2008, the group attracts actors, producers, lawyers, doctors and such, says attorney Lindsay Berger Sacks, a DDC co-founder. (She declined to name the members, though Wasser says she's an attendee.) "We didn't think this was the kind of community that wanted to get to know their neighbors," says Sacks. "But it seems that everybody wants that." BIRD STREETS: BY THE NUMBERS Houses for Sale: 15 Average Price: $5.92 million Price Range: $1.25 million-$18 million Houses for Rent: 7 Average Price: $17,071/month Source: Realtor.com THE "BLUE JAY WAY" HOUSE: $17,000/month: The Blue Jay Way residence where late Beatles guitarist George Harrison lived in August 1967 when he wrote the iconic song named for the street is a rental. Now occupied, the 4,116-square-foot abode includes three bedrooms and offers panoramic views. The setting provided Harrison with the lofty vantage point from which to write the psychedelic song about waiting for his friends to pay him a visit. (Sample lyric: "There's a fog upon L.A., and my friends have lost their way.") Broker Josh Buxbaum, who handles leasing of the property along with Stamie Karakasidis for the undisclosed owner, says the house "has a really special feel to it." Related Topics

Concord Raiders Owner Al Davis Dies at 82

Concord, Calif. - Al Davis, the Hall of Fame who owns the Concord Raiders noted for his edgy spirit, has died.Related Subjects•Obituaries They stated the 82-year-old died at his home in Concord on 'life was imple'. It had been Davis' readiness to buck the establishment that assisted turn the National football league in to the establishment in sports - probably the most effective sports league in American history. PHOTOS: Hollywood's Notable Deaths Davis was charming, cantankerous and compassionate - a guy who when his wife experienced a significant cardiac arrest within the seventies moved into her hospital room. But he was best referred to as a digital rebel, a guy who established a team whose silver-and-black colors and sailing logo design represented his attitude toward authority, both around the area and off. Davis was probably the most important figures in National football league history. Which was most apparent throughout the eighties when he fought against in the court - and won - for the best to maneuver his team from Concord to La. Despite he moved it well towards the San Francisco Bay Area in 1995, he visited court, suing for $1.2 billion to determine he still possessed the privileges towards the L.A. market. Before decline from the Raiders right into a perennial loser within the first decade from the twenty-first century he would be a champion, the guy who like a coach, then owner-gm-p facto coach, established what he known as "they from the decades" according to another slogan: "resolve for excellence." And also the Raiders were excellent, winning three Super Bowls throughout the seventies and eighties and fighting every other season - a business full of castoffs and troublemakers who converted into difficulties for competitors. Davis, chosen in 1992 towards the Professional Football Hall of Fame, also would be a trailblazer. He hired the very first black mind coach of modern times - Art Spend in 1988. He hired the very first Latino coach, Tom Flores and also the first lady Boss, Amy Trask. And that he was infallibly loyal to his gamers and authorities: to become a Raider was to become a Raider for existence. However it was his edgy spirit, that readiness to buck the establishment, that assisted turn the National football league in to the establishment in sports - probably the most effective sports league in American history. He was the final commissioner from the American Football league and brought it on personnel forays that assisted pressure a merger that switched the broadened National football league in to the colossus it remains. Born in Brockton, Mass., Davis was raised in Brooklyn and graduated from Erasmus Hall Senior High School, a breeding ground within the 2 decades after The Second World War for several ambitious youthful individuals who grew to become famous in sports, business and entertainment. Davis was possibly the 2nd most well-known after Barbra Streisand. "We'd a reunion in La and 500 people turned up, including Bah-bruh," he once told an interviewer for the reason that mixture of southern drawl/Brooklynese which was frequently parodied among his acquaintances inside the league and without. A graduate of Syracuse College, he grew to become an assistant coach using the Baltimore Colts at 24 and was an assistant in the Citadel after which Los Angeles before joining the La Battery chargers from the new AFL in 1960. Only 3 years later, he was hired through the Raiders and grew to become the youngest gm-mind coach in professional football history having a team he known as "the Raid-uhs" in 1963. He was a high quality one, 23-16-3 in three seasons having a franchise which had began its existence 9-23. He then bought in to the failing franchise, which performed on the senior high school area next to the Nimitz Freeway in Concord and grew to become controlling general partner, a situation he held until his dying. But because the many vibrant youthful coaches he hired - from John Madden, Mike Shanahan and Jon Gruden to Lane Kiffin - discovered, he continued to be the coach. He went from the sidelines, frequently calling lower with plays, or delivering emissaries towards the sidelines to create alternatives. In 1966, he grew to become commissioner from the AFL. But before that, he'd started to break an unwritten truce between your youthful league and it is established rivals, which fought against over draft options but didn't pursue established gamers. Even though the National football league's NY Titans' signing of Zoysia placekicker Pete Gogolak marked the very first break for the reason that rule, it had been Davis who started to visit after National football league stars - going after quarterbacks John Brodie and Roman Gabriel because he attempted to determine AFL supremacy. Davis' war precipitated first talks of merger, although Davis opposed it. But brought by Lamar Search of Might, the AFL proprietors agreed that peace was best. A typical draft was established, and also the first Super Bowl was performed following a 1966 season - Eco-friendly Bay beat Might, then continued to conquer Davis' Raiders the following season. By 1970, the leagues were fully merged and also the league had the fundamental structure it maintains until this very day - using the National football league's Pete Rozelle as commissioner, not Davis, who wanted the task badly. So he returned towards the Raiders, managing a team that won Super Bowls following the 1976, 1980 and 1983 seasons - the final one out of La, in which the franchise moved in 1982 after protracted court fights. It had been a fighting bunch, full of gamers for example John Matuszak, Mike Haynes and Lyle Alzado, stars who didn't complete elsewhere who coupled with homegrown stars - Ken Stabler, another edgy spirit Gene Upshaw Spend, Jack Tatum, Willie Brown and a large number of others. Davis never was a business guy. Not in the manner he outfitted: jump suits having a Raiders logo design: whitened or black, using the periodic black suit, black shirt and silver tie. Not in the manner he used his hair - even well into his ྂs it had been slicked back having a ཮s duck-tail. Not in the manner he did business - by himself terms, always by himself terms. After extended legal cases including the proceed to La, he returned to Concord and also at some point in early many years of a lifetime was involved with suits in southern and northern California - the main one choosing the La privileges and the other suing Concord for neglecting to deliver sellouts they guaranteed to find the Raiders back. But when proprietors and league professionals top quality Davis a renegade, buddies and former gamers find him the epitome of loyalty. When his wife, Carol, were built with a serious cardiac arrest, he moved into her hospital room and resided there for over a month. So when he listens to that a distant acquaintance is ill, he'll offer medical help without worrying about expense. "Disease may be the one factor - boy I say to you, it's difficult to lick," he stated in 2008, speaking concerning the leg conditions which had restricted him to presenting a master. "It's difficult to lick individuals illnesses. I don't know why they are able to't." A couple of years earlier, he stated: "I'm able to control the majority of things, however i don't appear to have the ability to control dying. "Everyone appears to become happening me." Because he aged, his teams rejected. The Raiders reached the Super Bowl following the 2002 season, losing to Polk Bay. However for a lengthy period next, they'd the worst record within the National football league, at some point with five coaches in six years. A lot of it was Davis' refusal to step back in the football operation - he'd have a dislike to stars and order them benched. Probably the most glaring example was Marcus Allen, probably the most valuable player within the 1984 Super Bowl, the final the Raiders won. For reasons never made obvious, Davis required a dislike to his star running back and purchased him benched for 2 seasons. He launched him following the 1992 season, and Allen visited Might. Davis' only comment: "He would be a cancer around the team." The little incorporated town of Irwindale, 20 miles east of La, learned an costly lesson about coping with Davis. The town gave the Raiders $ten million to exhibit its good belief in 1988, but environment issues, financing problems and regional opposition scuttled intends to turn a gravel pit right into a $115 million, 65,000-chair stadium. The deposit was nonrefundable, and Irwindale never got a cent back. When he fired Mike Shanahan in 1988 after 20 games as mind coach, he declined to pay for him the $300,000 he was owed. When he grew to become coach from the Colorado Broncos, Shanahan delighted most in fighting the Raiders and Davis. So when Davis fired Lane Kiffin "for cause" in 2008, withholding the relaxation of his contract, the usually humorless Shanahan remarked:"I had been just a little disappointed, to tell the truth along with you. Whenever you have a look in internet marketing, I had been there 582 days. Lane Kiffin was there 616 days. So, exactly what it means is the fact that Al Davis loved Lane a lot more than he loved me. I truly don't think it's fair. I won three more games, yet he got 34 more times of work. That simply doesn't appear right." However for the majority of his existence, couple of people chuckled at Al Davis. Related Subjects Obituaries

Paranormal Activity 3 Viral VHS Tapes Pop Up at Fantastic Fest

Today at Fantastic Fest, Movieline got its hands on a VHS tape labeled “September 1988,” packaged in an unmarked manila envelope. Perhaps (probably) not coincidentally, the date corresponds to recently released footage from Paranormal Activity 3, the forthcoming found footage prequel about spooky goings-on in the lives of a family haunted by unseen forces. Could this have something to do with tomorrow’s hotly anticipated secret screening? The first secret screening of this year’s fest was Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In, and buzz around Fantastic Fest had Paranormal Activity 3 as a good guess for Secret Screening #2. The original Paranormal Activity, filmed for $15,000, first debuted on the festival circuit and played Fantastic Fest before turning into a box office phenomenon fueled by word of mouth and viral marketing. Its follow-up, 2010’s Paranormal Activity 2, also screened at the Austin festival and employed a local viral campaign consisting of footage mysteriously popping up around town on flash drives. Taking place in 1988, Paranormal Activity 3 is a prequel that explains what happened to sisters Katie and Kristi back when they were kids when they first caught the attention of the demonic spirit that would haunt their families in the first two films. (Watch three previously released preview clips of PA3 here for a taste.) I haven’t yet had a chance to hunt down a VHS player here in Austin to see what’s on the tape. (Anyone nearby have one? Hit me up at @jenyamato.) Is this the first piece of concrete evidence that Fantastic Fest is about to get spooked yet again? Paranormal Activity 3 is set to hit theaters on October 21, so a surprise debut at Fantastic Fest would mark its world premiere. If you PA fans didn’t yet have a ticket to the Secret Screening #2, which screens tomorrow at midnight, now might be the time to start hunting them down. Amazing Race's Phil Keoghan: We Have the Most Competitive Cast Yet

Phil Keoghan It's been 10 years since Phil Keoghan first set off on The Amazing Race - but don't show him pictures from back then. "I was talking to [executive producer] Jonathan Littman and he said, 'Man, Phil, I found some photographs of us from 10 years ago where we were at the finishing line in NY City - we were children!' I was like, 'Do I want to see those?'" Keoghan tells TVGuide.com. "But I really can't believe it's been that long. It's quite extraordinary to think about."Fall Preview: Get scoop on all your favorite returning showsTen years later, Race is still on top of the world - reclaiming the reality-competition program Emmy after seeing its seven-year streak snapped by Top Chef last year - and is still upping the game every season. The 19th installment, premiering Sunday (8/7c, CBS), features a new element, the Hazard, which is a penalty given to the last team that completes the starting-line task, its first-ever double elimination, four new countries and some pretty well-known names: Survivor champs and couple Ethan Zohn and Jenna Morasca; Zac Sunderland, the youngest person to sail around the world; Olympic snowboarders Andy Finch and Tommy Czeschin; and former NFL player Marcus Pollard.See what Keoghan -whose film The Ride, which supports multiple sclerosis charities, will air on Showtime later this year -says about the new twists, whether or not the show is stunt-casting and what helped them prevail again at the Emmys. Congrats on the Emmy! Did you think you could win it again?Keoghan: Thank you! I did not. It's pretty extraordinary. I thought that to change the Academy's mind back again would be a very difficult thing to do, and we certainly focused on doing that and making sure we got their attention again, but I really did not think we would win. The episode that was sent through in Varanasi was a very special and unique episode that we felt could earn their respect, and I guess it worked.Last season was also your first in HD. Do you think that contributed at all?Keoghan: I do. I think that HD has absolutely enhanced the product and I do think that played a role, just because all of a sudden what we're doing is being shared on a whole new level. ... A huge part of the show has always been showing off where we, are and now with the format and the HD, it's added a dimension to the Race that we just didn't have for years, and I think you'll see that even more this season. This season you have four teams of well-known people, at the very least in their own fields. Some fans think there's been too much stunt-casting in the past few years. Do you feel that way or should it not matter what one's notoriety is if they want to be on the Race?Keoghan: I don't think it's any different than when we had Rob and Amber [Mariano] or a team from Big Brother or the Globetrotters or champion bull riders with the cowboys. It's just about finding interesting people, and I think as the show's gone on, more interesting people have reached out to us. At the end of the day, it really has less to do with that someone is a celebrity than it has with the fact that if we find somebody we think is interesting. If [someone's] more interesting than a celebrity, then we're going to pick the more interesting character. ... I think it's great we have such a competitive group this time. It's a way of trying something different - these four teams are people who are proven in their fields. You will see right from the start that the so-called ordinary people there are extraordinary in their own right. They take it as a challenge, like if they know somebody has accomplished something and received notoriety for that, then they're definitely out to crush them.Meet the Amazing Race 19 castIs it more pressure on the Average Joes or the four teams?Keoghan: Oh, the four, absolutely! But at the same time, people at the starting line are not necessarily going to know who Marcus is. So the question is, is he going to disclose to people that he played in the NFL or is he going to try to slip under the radar and hope the attention goes to Ethan, who some people will definitely say, "Oh, that's the guy from Survivor," or [to] Jenna from Survivor. To the audience, they know who all these teams are because they get introduced to them, but to the rest of the teams, maybe they don't recognize Andy or Tommy.Their hippie look is totally going to throw off some people too since they did not look like that at the Olympics or during their careers. Do you think more well-known Racers should play it that way or even lie about their job like the poker girls did in Season 15?Keoghan: Yeah, I think it's less about lying and more about being quiet. The teams are not going to put their hands up and say, "I have an announcement everybody: We're Olympians. We're very competitive. We're incredibly agile and have great eye-hand coordination and we just wanted to give you a heads-up because we think it's good for you to know we have these great skills coming into the Race. Thank you." [Laughs] They're going to pretend like they're a couple of cruise-y guys living out in the commune somewhere. Why did you guys add the Hazard?Keoghan: It was a way to test people's mental strength out of the gate. How will they deal with this penalty and a surprise challenge out of the starting line? It was like a warm-up. It's something that is announced at the very beginning, but it has a rolling effect going forward through the rest of the Race. On the other side of things, the Express Pass is back. That has been something people have wanted to fight for. It's been a great addition. You want people racing from the start. It's only been in effect the past two seasons, but I think it's funny that the two teams that have won the Express Pass both came in third and were undone by a bad cabbie.Keoghan: [Laughs] Yeah, if there's one consistent thing on The Amazing Race, it's the unpredictability of the cab drivers. The times I worry the most about the teams are when they're in somebody else's vehicle and when they're driving. I don't worry about anything else on the show because we test every challenge over and over again because we're paranoid about making sure it's a safe, fair race. Other shows can control challenges in a studio or on a set, but we're operating in the real world. We have a few circumstances this season. The weather played a major effect on where we went later on. We had to change course midway through, so that was a challenge. You also had your first-ever double elimination.Keoghan: That's not something that the [teams] know straightaway either. We only tell them about the new challenge and the Hazard. And, yes, as luck will have it, out of the gate, some real-world influences play into that first episode of our Race in Taiwan. One of those golden moments that happened added another layer to everything that was set up. Fate plays a huge role. It has a domino effect on the teams and [was] something that was completely out of our control and made us scramble.Check out our fall preview for galleries, scoop, premiere calendars and more! You visit four new countries, Belgium, Denmark, Malawi and Indonesia. That's a pretty big number for one season.Keoghan: Yeah, this is a lot for us. Indonesia is a big one. It's such an exotic, stunning place - more volcanoes there than any other place in the world. It has an incredible, rich history. Any time we can show off somewhere new is very important for us. ... And we pride ourselves on having indigenous challenges. Because there are certain jobs and ways of life in Indonesia, we want to integrate them into our challenges. There's a reason people are fishing the way they're fishing. There are missing passports yet again in the first episode. What other drama can we expect? Anything like chocolate gnome-gate?Keoghan: [Laughs] Oh, nothing like that. But things do get very heated and people make assumptions. I think we have a great cast this year. ... You're going to see how impossible it is to judge who is better - like the flight attendants. They're not necessarily the fittest people, but certainly they've got knowledge of getting through airports and how travel works. I think we have the most competitive cast yet.

Take This Waltz

A Joe's Daughter and Mongrel Media presentation in association with TF1 Droits Audiovisuels, with the participation of Telefilm Canada, Ontario Media Development Corp. and Astral's Harold Greenberg Fund, produced in association with the Movie Network, Movie Central, Super Ecran and the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (International sales: TF1 Intl., Paris.) Produced by Susan Cavan, Sarah Polley. Directed, written by Sarah Polley.Margot - Michelle Williams Lou - Seth Rogen Daniel - Luke Kirby Geraldine - Sarah SilvermanGiven how quickly movie characters tend to fall into bed with one another, it's especially rewarding to see writer-director Sarah Polley wring maximum tension, humor and emotional complexity from a young wife's crisis of conscience in "Take This Waltz." Despite a few tonal and structural missteps, this intelligent, perceptive drama proves as intimately and gratifyingly femme-focused as Polley's 2006 debut, "Away From Her." It's also flat-out sexy enough to appeal to discerning audiences of either gender, a marketably risque point that shouldn't go overlooked amid likely acclaim for the superb performances by Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen. Twenty-eight-year-old Margot (a red-haired Williams) is traveling in Nova Scotia when she has a strained first encounter with a guy about her age, Daniel (Luke Kirby). The awkwardness continues, even as an unmistakable spark ignites, when Margot and Daniel wind up seated together on their flight home to Toronto and share a taxi, only to realize they're across-the-street neighbors. This coincidence warns of an incipient preciousness, as do some of the scenario's quirkier aspects, especially the characters' occupations: Aspiring artist Daniel pulls a rickshaw, while Margot's husband of five years, Lou (Rogen), writes cookbooks specializing in chicken recipes. (Margot, for her part, doesn't seem to work much beyond irregular freelance writing assignments.) Margot and Lou's extended bouts of lovey-dovey talk can feel cloying, though one feels less inclined to gag when it becomes clear that Polley is etching one of the more personal and persuasive portraits of a modern marriage in recent movies. Margot's love for her big-hearted lug of a husband is obvious, as is her mild dissatisfaction with their routine, little of which escapes Polley's notice: not just the words they exchange but also their silences, body language, the positions they sleep in, even the way Margot hugs Lou while he's trying to cook, an invitation to foreplay he's slow to pick up on. The writer-director proves just as attentive to Margot's growing interest in Daniel, though their early interactions are so quirkily combative, it's not entirely clear what they're feeling is attraction. Any doubt on that front is removed when Daniel tells Margot exactly what he'd like to do with her physically, in a whispery monologue that quavers with eroticism. That the film's big seduction is carried out entirely through words indicates the subtlety of the register Polley is working in. Not that "Take This Waltz" shies away from bared flesh, having earlier treated viewers to a lingering eyeful in a women's locker room at Margot's gym. Though likely to appeal to male audiences for obvious reasons, this extended sequence also captures how at ease and unself-conscious these women feel in their own company, in contrast with their more guarded ways of relating to the men in their lives. So focused on emotional states and details that it provides little overall sense of where it's headed from scene to scene, the film spends much of its nearly two-hour running time agonizing over what Margot will or won't do. It's an engrossing if slow-building quandary, as well as a principled acknowledgment that certain temptations are easier entertained than acted upon. After Williams' powerful take on marital discontent in last year's "Blue Valentine," it will surprise no one that the actress again seems incapable of striking a wrong note in a performance that exposes layers of restlessness, uncertainty and sexual curiosity. The revelation here is Rogen, who reins in his boisterous persona but not his comedic instincts in a wonderfully affectionate, possibly career-best turn. As a potential home-wrecker, Kirby doesn't have sympathy on his side, playing Daniel with a hint of sleaze that plainly excites Margot even if the viewer's mileage may vary. Supporting-cast standout is Sarah Silverman, feisty and authentic as Lou's recovering-alcoholic sister; she figures heavily into a climactic scene that throws the picture temporarily off balance, though it springs from Polley's understandable desire to extend emotional closure to her characters. Pic was shot during a sweltering Toronto summer, and the heat comes through not only in the sexually charged atmosphere but also the warm-colored interiors of Matthew Davies' production design. Aided by d.p. Luc Montpellier, Polley shows an impressively ripening visual sense, from a tracking shot that repeatedly circles her characters to the recurring close-ups of their feet as they walk, as if to underscore the idea of different paths through life. Most memorable selection on a soundtrack boasting plenty of Canadian talent is the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star," used here to poetic effect.Camera (color), Luc Montpellier; editor, Christopher Donaldson; music, Jonathan Goldsmith; music supervisor, Jody Colero; production designer, Matthew Davies; art director, Aleks Marinkovich; set decorator, Steve Shewchuk; costume designer, Lea Carlson; sound (Dolby Digital), John Thomson; supervising sound editor, Jane Tattersall; supervising re-recording mixer, Lou Solakofski; re-recording mixer, special effects coordinator, Laird McMurray; visual effects supervisor, Robert Crowther; visual effects, Rocket Science VFX; stunt coordinator, Alison Reid; line producer, D.J.
