Paranormal Activity 3 Viral VHS Tapes Pop Up at Fantastic Fest

Today at Fantastic Fest, Movieline got its hands on a VHS tape labeled “September 1988,” packaged in an unmarked manila envelope. Perhaps (probably) not coincidentally, the date corresponds to recently released footage from Paranormal Activity 3, the forthcoming found footage prequel about spooky goings-on in the lives of a family haunted by unseen forces. Could this have something to do with tomorrow’s hotly anticipated secret screening? The first secret screening of this year’s fest was Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In, and buzz around Fantastic Fest had Paranormal Activity 3 as a good guess for Secret Screening #2. The original Paranormal Activity, filmed for $15,000, first debuted on the festival circuit and played Fantastic Fest before turning into a box office phenomenon fueled by word of mouth and viral marketing. Its follow-up, 2010’s Paranormal Activity 2, also screened at the Austin festival and employed a local viral campaign consisting of footage mysteriously popping up around town on flash drives. Taking place in 1988, Paranormal Activity 3 is a prequel that explains what happened to sisters Katie and Kristi back when they were kids when they first caught the attention of the demonic spirit that would haunt their families in the first two films. (Watch three previously released preview clips of PA3 here for a taste.) I haven’t yet had a chance to hunt down a VHS player here in Austin to see what’s on the tape. (Anyone nearby have one? Hit me up at @jenyamato.) Is this the first piece of concrete evidence that Fantastic Fest is about to get spooked yet again? Paranormal Activity 3 is set to hit theaters on October 21, so a surprise debut at Fantastic Fest would mark its world premiere. If you PA fans didn’t yet have a ticket to the Secret Screening #2, which screens tomorrow at midnight, now might be the time to start hunting them down. Amazing Race's Phil Keoghan: We Have the Most Competitive Cast Yet

Phil Keoghan It's been 10 years since Phil Keoghan first set off on The Amazing Race - but don't show him pictures from back then. "I was talking to [executive producer] Jonathan Littman and he said, 'Man, Phil, I found some photographs of us from 10 years ago where we were at the finishing line in NY City - we were children!' I was like, 'Do I want to see those?'" Keoghan tells TVGuide.com. "But I really can't believe it's been that long. It's quite extraordinary to think about."Fall Preview: Get scoop on all your favorite returning showsTen years later, Race is still on top of the world - reclaiming the reality-competition program Emmy after seeing its seven-year streak snapped by Top Chef last year - and is still upping the game every season. The 19th installment, premiering Sunday (8/7c, CBS), features a new element, the Hazard, which is a penalty given to the last team that completes the starting-line task, its first-ever double elimination, four new countries and some pretty well-known names: Survivor champs and couple Ethan Zohn and Jenna Morasca; Zac Sunderland, the youngest person to sail around the world; Olympic snowboarders Andy Finch and Tommy Czeschin; and former NFL player Marcus Pollard.See what Keoghan -whose film The Ride, which supports multiple sclerosis charities, will air on Showtime later this year -says about the new twists, whether or not the show is stunt-casting and what helped them prevail again at the Emmys. Congrats on the Emmy! Did you think you could win it again?Keoghan: Thank you! I did not. It's pretty extraordinary. I thought that to change the Academy's mind back again would be a very difficult thing to do, and we certainly focused on doing that and making sure we got their attention again, but I really did not think we would win. The episode that was sent through in Varanasi was a very special and unique episode that we felt could earn their respect, and I guess it worked.Last season was also your first in HD. Do you think that contributed at all?Keoghan: I do. I think that HD has absolutely enhanced the product and I do think that played a role, just because all of a sudden what we're doing is being shared on a whole new level. ... A huge part of the show has always been showing off where we, are and now with the format and the HD, it's added a dimension to the Race that we just didn't have for years, and I think you'll see that even more this season. This season you have four teams of well-known people, at the very least in their own fields. Some fans think there's been too much stunt-casting in the past few years. Do you feel that way or should it not matter what one's notoriety is if they want to be on the Race?Keoghan: I don't think it's any different than when we had Rob and Amber [Mariano] or a team from Big Brother or the Globetrotters or champion bull riders with the cowboys. It's just about finding interesting people, and I think as the show's gone on, more interesting people have reached out to us. At the end of the day, it really has less to do with that someone is a celebrity than it has with the fact that if we find somebody we think is interesting. If [someone's] more interesting than a celebrity, then we're going to pick the more interesting character. ... I think it's great we have such a competitive group this time. It's a way of trying something different - these four teams are people who are proven in their fields. You will see right from the start that the so-called ordinary people there are extraordinary in their own right. They take it as a challenge, like if they know somebody has accomplished something and received notoriety for that, then they're definitely out to crush them.Meet the Amazing Race 19 castIs it more pressure on the Average Joes or the four teams?Keoghan: Oh, the four, absolutely! But at the same time, people at the starting line are not necessarily going to know who Marcus is. So the question is, is he going to disclose to people that he played in the NFL or is he going to try to slip under the radar and hope the attention goes to Ethan, who some people will definitely say, "Oh, that's the guy from Survivor," or [to] Jenna from Survivor. To the audience, they know who all these teams are because they get introduced to them, but to the rest of the teams, maybe they don't recognize Andy or Tommy.Their hippie look is totally going to throw off some people too since they did not look like that at the Olympics or during their careers. Do you think more well-known Racers should play it that way or even lie about their job like the poker girls did in Season 15?Keoghan: Yeah, I think it's less about lying and more about being quiet. The teams are not going to put their hands up and say, "I have an announcement everybody: We're Olympians. We're very competitive. We're incredibly agile and have great eye-hand coordination and we just wanted to give you a heads-up because we think it's good for you to know we have these great skills coming into the Race. Thank you." [Laughs] They're going to pretend like they're a couple of cruise-y guys living out in the commune somewhere. Why did you guys add the Hazard?Keoghan: It was a way to test people's mental strength out of the gate. How will they deal with this penalty and a surprise challenge out of the starting line? It was like a warm-up. It's something that is announced at the very beginning, but it has a rolling effect going forward through the rest of the Race. On the other side of things, the Express Pass is back. That has been something people have wanted to fight for. It's been a great addition. You want people racing from the start. It's only been in effect the past two seasons, but I think it's funny that the two teams that have won the Express Pass both came in third and were undone by a bad cabbie.Keoghan: [Laughs] Yeah, if there's one consistent thing on The Amazing Race, it's the unpredictability of the cab drivers. The times I worry the most about the teams are when they're in somebody else's vehicle and when they're driving. I don't worry about anything else on the show because we test every challenge over and over again because we're paranoid about making sure it's a safe, fair race. Other shows can control challenges in a studio or on a set, but we're operating in the real world. We have a few circumstances this season. The weather played a major effect on where we went later on. We had to change course midway through, so that was a challenge. You also had your first-ever double elimination.Keoghan: That's not something that the [teams] know straightaway either. We only tell them about the new challenge and the Hazard. And, yes, as luck will have it, out of the gate, some real-world influences play into that first episode of our Race in Taiwan. One of those golden moments that happened added another layer to everything that was set up. Fate plays a huge role. It has a domino effect on the teams and [was] something that was completely out of our control and made us scramble.Check out our fall preview for galleries, scoop, premiere calendars and more! You visit four new countries, Belgium, Denmark, Malawi and Indonesia. That's a pretty big number for one season.Keoghan: Yeah, this is a lot for us. Indonesia is a big one. It's such an exotic, stunning place - more volcanoes there than any other place in the world. It has an incredible, rich history. Any time we can show off somewhere new is very important for us. ... And we pride ourselves on having indigenous challenges. Because there are certain jobs and ways of life in Indonesia, we want to integrate them into our challenges. There's a reason people are fishing the way they're fishing. There are missing passports yet again in the first episode. What other drama can we expect? Anything like chocolate gnome-gate?Keoghan: [Laughs] Oh, nothing like that. But things do get very heated and people make assumptions. I think we have a great cast this year. ... You're going to see how impossible it is to judge who is better - like the flight attendants. They're not necessarily the fittest people, but certainly they've got knowledge of getting through airports and how travel works. I think we have the most competitive cast yet.

Take This Waltz

A Joe's Daughter and Mongrel Media presentation in association with TF1 Droits Audiovisuels, with the participation of Telefilm Canada, Ontario Media Development Corp. and Astral's Harold Greenberg Fund, produced in association with the Movie Network, Movie Central, Super Ecran and the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (International sales: TF1 Intl., Paris.) Produced by Susan Cavan, Sarah Polley. Directed, written by Sarah Polley.Margot - Michelle Williams Lou - Seth Rogen Daniel - Luke Kirby Geraldine - Sarah SilvermanGiven how quickly movie characters tend to fall into bed with one another, it's especially rewarding to see writer-director Sarah Polley wring maximum tension, humor and emotional complexity from a young wife's crisis of conscience in "Take This Waltz." Despite a few tonal and structural missteps, this intelligent, perceptive drama proves as intimately and gratifyingly femme-focused as Polley's 2006 debut, "Away From Her." It's also flat-out sexy enough to appeal to discerning audiences of either gender, a marketably risque point that shouldn't go overlooked amid likely acclaim for the superb performances by Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen. Twenty-eight-year-old Margot (a red-haired Williams) is traveling in Nova Scotia when she has a strained first encounter with a guy about her age, Daniel (Luke Kirby). The awkwardness continues, even as an unmistakable spark ignites, when Margot and Daniel wind up seated together on their flight home to Toronto and share a taxi, only to realize they're across-the-street neighbors. This coincidence warns of an incipient preciousness, as do some of the scenario's quirkier aspects, especially the characters' occupations: Aspiring artist Daniel pulls a rickshaw, while Margot's husband of five years, Lou (Rogen), writes cookbooks specializing in chicken recipes. (Margot, for her part, doesn't seem to work much beyond irregular freelance writing assignments.) Margot and Lou's extended bouts of lovey-dovey talk can feel cloying, though one feels less inclined to gag when it becomes clear that Polley is etching one of the more personal and persuasive portraits of a modern marriage in recent movies. Margot's love for her big-hearted lug of a husband is obvious, as is her mild dissatisfaction with their routine, little of which escapes Polley's notice: not just the words they exchange but also their silences, body language, the positions they sleep in, even the way Margot hugs Lou while he's trying to cook, an invitation to foreplay he's slow to pick up on. The writer-director proves just as attentive to Margot's growing interest in Daniel, though their early interactions are so quirkily combative, it's not entirely clear what they're feeling is attraction. Any doubt on that front is removed when Daniel tells Margot exactly what he'd like to do with her physically, in a whispery monologue that quavers with eroticism. That the film's big seduction is carried out entirely through words indicates the subtlety of the register Polley is working in. Not that "Take This Waltz" shies away from bared flesh, having earlier treated viewers to a lingering eyeful in a women's locker room at Margot's gym. Though likely to appeal to male audiences for obvious reasons, this extended sequence also captures how at ease and unself-conscious these women feel in their own company, in contrast with their more guarded ways of relating to the men in their lives. So focused on emotional states and details that it provides little overall sense of where it's headed from scene to scene, the film spends much of its nearly two-hour running time agonizing over what Margot will or won't do. It's an engrossing if slow-building quandary, as well as a principled acknowledgment that certain temptations are easier entertained than acted upon. After Williams' powerful take on marital discontent in last year's "Blue Valentine," it will surprise no one that the actress again seems incapable of striking a wrong note in a performance that exposes layers of restlessness, uncertainty and sexual curiosity. The revelation here is Rogen, who reins in his boisterous persona but not his comedic instincts in a wonderfully affectionate, possibly career-best turn. As a potential home-wrecker, Kirby doesn't have sympathy on his side, playing Daniel with a hint of sleaze that plainly excites Margot even if the viewer's mileage may vary. Supporting-cast standout is Sarah Silverman, feisty and authentic as Lou's recovering-alcoholic sister; she figures heavily into a climactic scene that throws the picture temporarily off balance, though it springs from Polley's understandable desire to extend emotional closure to her characters. Pic was shot during a sweltering Toronto summer, and the heat comes through not only in the sexually charged atmosphere but also the warm-colored interiors of Matthew Davies' production design. Aided by d.p. Luc Montpellier, Polley shows an impressively ripening visual sense, from a tracking shot that repeatedly circles her characters to the recurring close-ups of their feet as they walk, as if to underscore the idea of different paths through life. Most memorable selection on a soundtrack boasting plenty of Canadian talent is the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star," used here to poetic effect.Camera (color), Luc Montpellier; editor, Christopher Donaldson; music, Jonathan Goldsmith; music supervisor, Jody Colero; production designer, Matthew Davies; art director, Aleks Marinkovich; set decorator, Steve Shewchuk; costume designer, Lea Carlson; sound (Dolby Digital), John Thomson; supervising sound editor, Jane Tattersall; supervising re-recording mixer, Lou Solakofski; re-recording mixer, special effects coordinator, Laird McMurray; visual effects supervisor, Robert Crowther; visual effects, Rocket Science VFX; stunt coordinator, Alison Reid; line producer, D.J. Whenever a lengthy taxi ride entangles their destinies, they gradually forge an unlikely friendship rooted in newly found solidarity, instead of moralistic notions of tolerance, which enables each to assist another accomplish complementary goals. This fascinating dual character study could lure gay and straight auds alike. Randa (Ghazal Shakeri) continues to be driving a cab since her husband visited jail for any debt suffered by a dishonest partner. She accumulates a fare who desires travel miles past the city limits, offering a considerable bonus for that trouble. Rana, a dutiful wife already way to avoid it of her safe place in her own unwillingly assumed job as cabbie, develops progressively uneasy about her strange passenger because the drive continues. Adineh (Sheyesteh Irani, probably the most masculine and assertive from the soccer match-crashes women in Jafar Panahi's "Offside"), registers desperation as cell-telephone calls to some friend demonstrate that her father has sent law enforcement to create her home. She's running the nation to flee an arranged marriage designed by her father, plans to obtain a transgender operation, as well as wants to locate a more welcome publish-op milieu. Realizing Rana's disinclination to take, Adineh initially allays Rana's fears by guaranteeing her that, despite her shorn hair and baseball cap, she is a real lady (and for that reason harmless). Later, though, she completely terrifies Rana by acknowledging she's a transsexual. The moments of these two women within the vehicle, never as minimalistically staged as Abbas Kiarostami's "Ten," unfold similar to a culture clash comedy, counterpointing Adineh's casual modernity with Rana's shocked responses -- until Rana hysterically rushes from the cab and it is hurt. After Adineh takes control of Rana's recovery, the cabbie endeavors to the town to satisfy Adineh's closed-minded relative and advocate on her newly found friend. Helmer Azarbayjani and her co-scripter, pioneering femme producer Fereshteh Taerpour, avoid gender stereotypes within their depiction from the transsexual, assisted greatly by Irani's deeply supportive perf. Adineh shows a strangely enough androgynous concern and empathy for Rana, achieving a type of gender synthesis in her own role as health professional. Consequently, her genuine kindness impresses Rana, who ends up determining with Adineh's mission for acceptance. Indeed Rana's championing of her new friend becomes an unpredicted supply of fearlessness, giving her back the feeling of purpose she lost together with her husband's jail time. Thesping is great within this character-driven drama, both stars abstaining from heavy-handedness in support of individualized understanding.Camera (color), Touraj Mansoori editors, Sepideh Abdolvahab, Azarbayjani music, Fardin Khalatbari art director, Ghazal Shakeri seem, Mehran Malakouti.
