Nine Lives
The movie takes place during World War II and depicts the true story of Jan Baalsruds amazing escape from the German army from the coast of Northern Norway and across the border to the neutral country Sweden. Jan Baalsrud is on a sabotage mission from England to Norway together with 11 other soldiers in the winter of 1943 in a fishing boat when they are attacked by a German patrolboat. Jan Baalsrud is the only one who manages to escape and sets off towards Sweden through the enormous amounts of snow and the steep mountains of Norway. The local communities where he passes through help him despite the danger of being arrested and killed. Jan Baalsrud, snowblind and having to cut off his toes because of frost-damage survives alone in the mountains for weeks. The locals are constantly trying to get him over to Sweden, but German patrols and the winter storms delay their departure.

Check Out the New Coriolanus Poster: Ralph Fiennes and Gerard Butler Square Off
I’m always nervous for adaptations of less-appreciated Shakespearean works. If you’re going to mount, say, Titus Andronicus, you have to find a way to make the violence meaningful. If you’re heading up a Tempest reboot, you have to deal with the extraneous fourth act elegantly. And if you’re reworking Coriolanus, you have to — well — find a way to make it interesting. Luckily, Ralph Fiennes is summoning his Amon Goeth fury in the poster for the new Weinstein adaptation, and Gerard Butler looks tough as his adversary. Excited? This is also Fiennes’s directorial debut. You can tell he’s dead serious about the integrity of the picture judging by his facial grimness and the direct Shakespearean quotation he uses as a tagline. Maybe he’s fooling us and it’s just a three-hour staring contest between the two lead actors. Could be just as harrowing, frankly. [via THR]

A raunchy summer time
"half an hour or Less"
It has been a hot summer time for raunch in the box office, a minimum of until lately. With six R-ranked comedies getting preceeded it on screens this summer time, Sony's "half an hour or Less" is all of the the studios' louche laffers for that season, although it hardly introduced the home lower. Warner Bros.' "The Hangover Part II" leads those, with $253.8 million locally, then Universal's B.O. surprise "Bridesmaids, with $166.8 million. The summer's crop of eight R-ranked comedies (such as the Weinstein Co.'s "Our Idiot Brother" ) may be the biggest associated with a summer time since PG-13 rankings were introduced back in 1984. The "Hangover" follow up were built with a considerable edge on the summer's other R-ranked comedies, following a first installment's massive recognition. But "Hangover II" also outgrossed the domestic total of popular family action franchise title, "Pirates from the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" ($239.3 million). The genre improbably has outperformed other family and action game titles: "Bridesmaids" out-gained "Kung Fu Panda 2" ($163.a million), while Warner's "Horrible Bosses," with $110 million locally, should exceed the studio's "Eco-friendly Lantern," ($114.six million). One of the remaining three choices, Sony's "Bad Teacher," which released June 24, has been doing extremely well, grossing $97.9 million through Sunday, while more recent records "Buddies With Benefits" and "Change-Up" have to date collected $53 million and $28.5 million, correspondingly. It's difficult as to whether the later two R-ranked comedies are losing ground since several had already opened up this year, or because galleries unveil their most promising game titles earlier. The Weinstein Co.'s Sundance pickup "Our Idiot Brother," starring Paul Rudd, launches countrywide the weekend of August. 26. Contact Andrew Stewart at andrew.stewart@variety.com

Meaghan Martin and Tyler Blackburn star in "Wendy," a brand new Web skein.
Galleries aren't the only real ones cashing in on reinventing the classics: Alloy Entertainment and Macy's have paired as much as produce "Wendy" like a Web series that puts a contemporary spin on "Peter Pan."Project, which stars Meaghan Martin and "Pretty Little Liars" thesp Tyler Blackburn, is Macy's initial foray into creating original entertainment following the animated special, "Yes, Virginia," on CBS last year. The retail giant's previous entertainment efforts have centered on large-tent special offers for NBC: the 85-year-old Thanksgiving Day parade and This summer 4th Fireworks. It's also done top quality tie-inches with "Project Runway" and fashion implies that target women. But Macy's desired to launch "Wendy" to talk more straight to teens and tweens, especially throughout the rear-to-school shopping season."We thought dealing with Alloy could be a fascinating method to enter the millennial market," stated Martine Reardon, executive Vice president of selling at Macy's. Alloy is behind "Vampire Journals," "Gossip Girl," "Pretty Little Liars" along with other more youthful-skewing femme fare.Macy's sparked to "Wendy" following the project was created by Alloy in an effort to "update classics" and "re-picture the Peter Pan story," stated Alloy prexy Josh Bank. The six episode-series involves Wendy Darling, a woman who starts to possess strange, vivid hopes for a mysterious boy named Pete (Blackburn) who she sets to get in the real life. After finding him she must decide between your boy she loves and Pete from her dreams.Blackburn recorded an authentic song for that series that'll be supported with a musicvideo that bows online Monday, per month before "Wendy" hits the net Sept. 15., as "a method to acquire some traction behind the figures" and "tease the home,Inch Reardon stated.Macy's will offer you the song like a download and video on its My Style Lab site (macys.com/mystylelab) as well as on the "Wendy" Facebook page. It will likewise be on Alloy's YouTube funnel. While series will feature Macy's brands like Material Girl and American Rag, the store and producers attempted to not result in the positions too blatant."Doing this was antithetical as to the we would like and what Macy's wants," Bank stated. "I was very obvious within our initial conferences this wasn't likely to be a Macy's ad. That isn't the company we are in."Macy's will expend heavily to advertise "Wendy" with TV spots which will air about the major tv stations throughout primetime and cablers ABC Family, MTV, E!, Forex, Vh1 and USA Network."Wendy" may be the third web series Alloy has created this season, and it is eighth overall, because it released an electronic division this past year. It's labored along with other brand partners including Kmart, L'Oreal and Procter & Gamble, amongst others.Metal and Macy's have bigger plans for "Wendy" continue.A magazine series is incorporated in the works, out of the box a giant screen feature that will follow Wendy into Neverland. But for the time being, they both were pleased to launch it online first."We all know (the web) is how the customer is typically," Reardon stated. "With a lot more from the millennial customer viewing things on the mobilie products, it appeared just like a good way to place this." Contact Marc Graser at marc.graser@variety.com

The Help Wins Tyler Perry's Stamp of Approval
No sooner did Viola Davis sing his praises today than Tyler Perry sent an influential endorsement of her new film to his mailing list. “Had to tell you this. I saw a movie called The Help that opens this Friday. I must say, I really enjoyed it! I love looking back and seeing how far we’ve come. And the performances in this film are stellar. Ms. Cicely Tyson was exceptionally Cicely. Viola Davis, this woman is remarkable. Octavia Spencer, she was like watching joy rise on the screen. You know I don’t recommend a lot of movies, so this one has to be special, right? Well it is!” Now you know.

Here's Your First Look at Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Future Catwoman, in The Dark Knight Rises
Perhaps due to some interoffice jealousy over the fact that Zack Snyder got to release a picture of Henry Cavill as Superman this week — or perhaps owing to a well-scheduled Google Calendar of marketing teases — the Dark Knight Rises team over at Warner Bros. has offered up a first look of Anne Hathaway in the Christopher Nolan mega-film. Exciting! How does Hathaway’s Selina Kyle compare to Michelle Pfeiffer’s iconic incarnation of the mischievous Catwoman in Batman Returns? Good, totally-unanswerable question, self! After all, it’s only a still photo. What the picture does show, however, is that Hathaway’s Ms. Kyle gets to ride a pretty badass Batcycle (or maybe Catcycle) in The Dark Knight Rises, all while wearing customary superhero leather. (Nice sunglasses, too; they look Bluetooth enabled.) One note about whether or not this is actually Hathaway as Catwoman: the .jpeg on the Dark Knight Rises website — where the picture was released — is labeled “selina_kyle.” Important distinguisher or totally meaningless? You make the call. Check out the full image below. [Click for bigger.] The Dark Knight Rises swings into theaters on July 20, 2012. [via thedarkknightrises.com]

Paul Schrader Takes Bait
Directing Brett Easton Ellis' screenplayLast we heard, Paul Schrader ought to have been in post-production on The Jesuit right about now. The action thriller seems to have stalled, however, so Schrader has secured himself a new gig directing Brett Easton Ellis' Bait. He's replacing the previously-announced Jonas Pate (Caprica) behind the camera. This one is not to be confused with Bait 3D which Russell Highlander Mulcahy wrote and is currently finishing up in Australia. It's going to be hard not to mix them up though, given that they both involve sharks, joining an already crowded school that also includes imminent releases for Shark Night and Dark Tide. You might wonder why long-time Scorsese collaborator Schrader, most recently behind The Walker and Adam Resurrected, would be interested in Bait at all, but we're guessing Ellis is the reason. The American Psycho writer's original script seems to hit on his usual preoccupations, involving a sociopathic waiter at an exclusive beach resort suffering humiliation at the hands of a gang of rich frat-boys. He decides to exact revenge by taking them on a boat trip into shark-infested waters, allowing them to be killed one at a time by a great toothy metaphor. Schrader's never been averse to a bit of genre fare, so we'll be intrigued to see what he brings to this. We're told his first job will be to touch up the screenplay. Maybe he'll also have a think about the title.

'Eastbound and Down' Team Locks Development Deal at 20th Television
The creative team behind the HBO comedy Eastbound and Down and such films as Pineapple Express has landed a one-year pod deal at 20th Century Fox Television to develop live-action and animated series for broadcast networks. Rough House Pictures, run by Eastbound co-creators Danny McBride and Jody Hill with frequent director collaborator David Gordon Green and executive Matt Reilly, will be tasked with bringing writers and other talent to the studio. The pact marks the first network TV deal for Rough House, created in 2009 by Green, Hill and McBride, buddies from the North Carolina School of the Arts. With Eastbound and such films as Observe and Report and Your Highness on their resumes, the Rough House guys have mostly trafficked in R-rated comedy. But 20th co-head Gary Newman says the studio was attracted to the principals' original voices, which won't need to be watered down too much for broadcast network series. "We won't be doing R-rated TV but what we don't want to reign in is the wild creativity," Newman tells THR. "They understand this. They're looking to bring their brand of humor to a wide audience." Rough House head Reilly agrees. "It's flexing different muscles," he says. "It's characters and a point of view. That doesn't just apply to gritty cable shows. We all grew up watching Cheers and M*A*S*H, the great network shows. Cable was our first course, this is our second course." The pact covers both animated and live-action comedy, and both Newman and Reilly see 20th's success with Seth MacFarlane's comedies (Family Guy, American Dad!, The Cleveland Show) as an example of off-color humor that has thrived on the Fox network. "It's great to know that guys like Seth have worked to push the envelope," Reilly says. "We hope to do that." McBride (CAA) and Hill (CAA) are currently in production on Season 3 of Eastbound. Green (CAA) is directing the forthcoming Jonah Hill feature The Sitter for 20th Century Fox.
